Taking Steps to Successful Newborn Kitten Care
Newborn kitten care starts before the actual birth of the kittens. The first step is to arm yourself with as much knowledge as you can so that you a properly prepared in offering successful newborn kitten care. Initially, after the birth of the kittens, you will notice very little activity from them. They sleep and they drink mothers milk – that’s it! The newborn kittens will not be frisky and jumping around – they’ll be crawling just as far as their mothers teats.
Administering Newborn Kitten Care
Barring any unforeseen issues, you will probably feel a little redundant after the birth. But this is not the case, really. While the mother is capable, your vigilance is the first step to achieving a successful outcome with your newborn kitten care skills. You will notice a lot of mothers love going on, the queen will be cleaning her kittens thoroughly however, both the mother and the kittens are vulnerable at this stage. They are weak with the kittens born eyes closed and ears folded down. It’ll take some time before the kittens eyes open – usually about 5-10 days and a few days after that before the kittens eyes open all the way. The eye coloring will be gray to begin with but the more personalized coloring will happen in about 3 months.

Cleanliness of the area is important, for mother, kittens and your family’s health. Keep an eye out for any unsanitary conditions but be careful not to be overzealous and disturb the kittens and mother too early. Clean around the peripheral area – where you cannot disturb. Also, very important – obviously do not be spraying harmful chemical detergents close to the basket area. An antiseptic wash is a preferable choice
Cats are generally good mothers, rearing their young with a natural instinct. However, your work with newborn kitten care may come in if she chooses to reject one of the kittens. This does happen and although it is assumed that this is the runt of the litter, this is not always the case. Whatever the reason, you are now responsible for that rejected kitten. It can also happen – not uncommon – that all the kittens are left without food if the cat has a health problem or is just simply not interested.
Feeding the kittens by hand can be done with a dropper or feeding bottle is the method and good cats milk replication is available at your vet, pet store or online. The average size of a kitten litter is about 5 so you may have your hands full.
When the Real Fun Starts with Newborn Kitten Care
Four weeks after birth the kittens should start to show signs of baby teeth growth. It is at this time you can start to feed them small portions of special food for kittens. Make sure that you weigh the kittens on a regular basis to ensure that they are growing healthily.
In the second month the real fun starts as the kittens begin to flex their instincts for play as they start to learn survival. Watching the kittens play will be an endless source of amusement for you although you will be worried about the drapes and furniture as these become the kittens jungle gyms.
By the time two months have passed, the kittens should be on solids, eating special kitten food and it will also be time to have them vaccinated against feline distemper. This is also a good time to start some basic training with the kittens and information on this can be found here
It is a rewarding experience having a litter of kittens around but sadly there will be a time that you have to say goodbye as you send them to good homes. This is by far the worst part of the process and it is difficult not to be attached to these playful balls of fur. If you have children, be mindful to remind them on every occasion you can that the kittens will have to leave one day. If not dealt with properly, this final process can become traumatic. All these factors are key to successful newborn kitten care.
