Kitten Training Basics
Kitten training is way easier than cat training – obviously the younger the cat then the easier to train. The basics of kitten training are to make the pet socially acceptable within the house with its behavior, non-aggression, not urinating or relieving itself inside. The nature of cats is that they are generally clean animals that do not just leave ‘presents’ for you to find. They cover and move on. It can be a problem sometimes when a cat chooses to urinate anyplace. This does happen with some cats and a lot of the time this could be a psychological issue of fear. Usually it will involve a dog in the house or another cat that torment the cat. Be mindful of this and if you have other animals in the house, keep watch on their interaction.
Style of Kitten Training
Unfortunately there are a lot of pet ‘guru’s” out there who claim to be experts in the way they train animals and, in this case, kitten training. Truth is, the most basic common sense is about the best way to train your pet. One of the most effective ways of disciplining is to scruff. (see Angry Cats) This technique of discipline is effective but do not over use it. Sometimes a stern voice can be enough. Cats are very independent animals and are not out to please you like dogs do. Do not expect an immediate “I’m sorry” purr and snuggle when you discipline. More likely you’ll get ‘the look’ and the cat will head off in another direction. But you have made your point and the kitten or cat will remember. Kitten training is not some mystic art. It really boils down to common sense.
Determine Your Kitten training By What Your Expectations Are
Kitten training should be determined by your expectations. In other words, how do you want your kitten to act when it’s a cat? Sounds simplistic, but so many cat owners are at a loss to why their cat is misbehaving when in fact they did not set out the expectation in the first place. By this, it means consistency. If you do not want your kitten to claw and bite when it’s a cat then make sure you teach that habit consistently when it’s a kitten. This is a fundamental element of any kitten traing – be consistent. Keep in line with your future expectations of the kitten when it’s a cat. Teach early and you’ll be saving yourself some real headaches later. Do all this and you will not need any guru telling you how to be a pro at kitten training.
